The definitions of extreme weather/climate events and "climate extreme" are discussed in the paper. On the basis of classifying the extreme events into four categories (namely extremes caused by variations in a single variable, events related to weather phenomena, compound events and climate extremes), the related extreme indices as well as their trends and corresponding impacts under the background of global warming are summarized. The results showed that intense precipitation events over mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River tend to be more frequent. Heat waves in eastern China are stronger and drought trend in northeast China and northern China, especially at the end of 20th century and at the beginning of 21 century, is increasing. Furthermore, drought events are frequent in southwest China over recent ten years. In order to minimize losses caused by the increasing meteorological disasters, it is extraordinary essential to strengthen the capability in monitoring and warning of high-impact extremes. Meanwhile, it is also necessary to strengthen engineering defense measures based on changes in extreme events to prevent flash floods and urban waterlogged disasters induced by intense precipitation as well as droughts and heat waves associated with insufficient precipitation.

In recent years, rainstorm chain disasters occurred frequently in megacities in China, seriously threatening people’s life and property safety and social stability. Therefore, it is essential to take effective measures to timely break the chain and mitigate the disasters. This study thoroughly analyzes the disaster chain system of rainstorms and studies the trend deduction model of waterlogging disasters and the important role of various deductive simulation results in intercepting the disaster chain. It also proposes a chain breaking idea of combining simulation deduction with comprehensive response and clarifies the response strategies of various emergency bodies in the disaster response in megacities. Moreover, an overall response idea based on the policy of preparation, supervision, simulation, connection, and rescue is proposed. In view of the key problems including multi-department plan coordination, multi-dimensional information aggregation, multi-level accurate warning, and multi-team linked dispatching, we propose the following countermeasures: completing the comprehensive plan system, constructing a monitoring and early warning network, improving simulation and deduction application, strengthening joint response ability, and boosting the accurate rescue ability. Furthermore, development suggestions are proposed from the following aspects: formulation of policies and regulations, compilation of standards, application of intelligent technology, promotion of intelligent early warning and directional release technology, and formation of a new pattern of “national emergency.”

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection: epidemiology, prevention, and treatment in China

Chronic hepatitis B is a major health problem in China. The universal vaccination program since 1992 has changed the epidemiology of hepatitis B virus infection in China from highly to moderately endemic. The most prevalent hepatitis B virus strains in China are genotypes B and C, whereas those in western provinces are genotypes D and C/D hybrid. Chronic hepatitis B poses a heavy burden to the society in China. Different treatment strategies have been explored to improve patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner. However, antiviral drugs with a low genetic barrier to resistance are still extensively used because of the generally low income and limited resources in China. Individualized antiviral therapy is closely associated with translational medicine, which utilizes information from studies on genomics, immune biomarkers, and fibrosis. The results of these studies are crucial in further improving treatment outcomes.
